The Essentials to a Successful Affiliate Marketing Business

Who doesn’t love affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is one of the fastest ways to make extra income. You can sign up with affiliate programs for free, you don’t need your own website and you don’t have to worry about customer service. What you do need though is to learn how to drive traffic to the merchant’s site and then sit back and collect your commissions.

Here are a few of the essentials to a successful affiliate marketing business:

What Are Your Favorite Products to Promote

There are a few different ways you can master affiliate marketing so what are your favorite products to promote?

You can start out by visiting sites such as Clickbank, PayDotCom, Commission Junction, etc. and chose products from there. Or as you spend your time here online and purchase products or services to use, you can then turn around and promote those products.

I can’t say I have a favorite product but I have been much more successful from people approaching me and asking me questions about my business which leads to subjects such as what autoresponder service do I use or what hosting account is my favorite. Just from my experience of using these services I can then recommend these products to others by sending them to the site through my link and I just made a commission. Most of these types of services are reoccurring so you will continue to receive commissions on a monthly basis instead of making just a onetime sale.

4 Common Mistakes Made When Starting Affiliate Marketing

People who enter the affiliate marketing arena do so with the intention of creating success. We all start in the exact same way, not knowing where to begin or the right steps to take. Everyone makes mistakes but if you can learn from them then you are ahead of the game. This is why I wanted to share with you 4 common mistakes made when starting affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Marketing Tip #5: Clear Terms

The affiliate program you join should have clear and brief terms. You know, you don’t want anything too lengthy and that are loaded with areas that will scare off most potential affiliates.

The terms should clearly state things such as offering residual commissions, point out their low tolerance for spam, any type of information that affiliate should be aware of.

Some affiliate programs don’t allow their products to be promoted through text links in emails so always be sure to read the terms before you decide to start promoting any affiliate products.

With the new FTC rules and regulations that were just implemented, be sure you understand the legal ramifications should you disregard any of the terms that you have agreed to uphold. Remember, this is your reputation on the line.

Affiliate Marketing Tip #4: Payment Schedule

The normal payment schedule for affiliates is net 30 to net 60 days after the sale. If you join a program that pays your commission after 60 days, most people will refuse to join.

Being paid on a regular scheduled basis is pretty much the norm in this industry so be sure to find out what your payment schedule is.

Also, be sure to find out how much commission you will be paid. Most pay out 50 to 75% commissions which is a very good payment structure. It’s a great incentive to get more people to join.

Affiliate Marketing Tip #3: Reporting and Tracking

Reporting and tracking your sales is very important. Successful affiliate programs will have reporting and tracking software that will update their affiliates 24/7 and monitor their progress.

Monthly reports just don’t seem to be enough if you want to be able to tweak your promotions based on the performance statistics. Some affiliates have had bad experiences with merchants in the past so a reporting interface offers some level of assurance with their affiliates.

A really great affiliate tracking software will include such information as:
